The Autoharp
This episode of Backroads & Banjos focuses on an instrument not often looked at in old-timey and early country recordings, the autoharp. While folks like Ernest Stoneman and the Carter Family used the autoharp in their music, it was not an instrument often given the limelight and was often relegated to duties of a background instrument to provide texture and depth to early recordings. This episode features selections from the Smithsonian Folkway's collection Masters of Old-Time Autoharp. Grace Family Music Homepage - Welcome
Contemporary, traditional and original folk music along with percussive dance from sisters Leela and Ellie Grace and from Mom Win Grace. Go to the Grace Family Music Store for music from The Grace Family, Discovery String Band (with Bob Dyer, Cathy Barton and Dave Para), and Leela and Ellie Grace. Win Grace hails from Columbia, Missouri and plays accordion, guitar, autoharps, piano, and feet (seated clogging!) - oh and she sings, of course. Leela and Ellie Grace tour and perform nationally and internationally together, as solo artists, and in other bands. Leela (guitar, banjo, percussive dance, and voice) lives in Portland, Oregon while Ellie (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, percussive dance, and voice) makes Asheville, North Carolina home. Both of them also teach music and dance when their touring schedule finds them at home.
